課程概述

Writing skills:
By the end of the semester students
1) should have received practice in writing clear outlines, paragraphs, and essays;
2) should be able to review, edit and correct their own and others' work for both content and language;
3) should be able to write accurately and appropriately within an assigned range of topics
4) should have improved the grammatical accuracy of their writing.

Professional/Academic communication skills:
During class activities, students will
1) give short presentations to three or four other students
2) discuss with peers various current issues and topics including history and culture
3) generate and develop useful habits and relevant skills toward more effective communication for both academic and social purposes.

Rhetorical modes: description, analytical, and expository writing

Mechanics and format of writing
Format: titles, paragraphs, punctuation, presentation of assignments
Plagiarism: what it is, and why it must be avoided
Citations and paraphrasing: introduction to ways to avoid plagiarism while making use of others’ writing in a proper way.
Writing emails: students should be given guidance in how to write formal emails
General learning attitudes (communicative): attentive, enthusiastic, and team spirit

1-3 Expressing an opinion about a social issue in one paragraph
4 Topic sentences, supporting details, and cohesion

10-12 Descriptive and analytical exercises

Written assignments

Written assignments will include paragraphs, outlines, proposals, short reports, and essays. Individual grading plans will be announced after the second class meeting.

Presentations 
40% 
Group activity I: 10% Group activity II: 20% Participation and discussion: 10% (Students who miss class meetings five times or more will get zero out of the 40% and can’t pass.)
